Mingorra Tinto Cão Rosé 2023
Mingorra Tinto Cão Rosé — A rosé from Herdade da Mingorra in the Baixo Alentejo, with winemaking by Pedro Hipólito, made from Tinto Cão.
The choice of grape is the argument. Tinto Cão is uncommon in the Alentejo — it is a Douro variety, late-ripening and low-yielding — and it was chosen precisely for its subtle fruit and fresh acidity, which is what most warm-region rosés lack.
The method belongs to gastronomic white wine rather than summer rosé: light maceration, gentle pressing, then fermentation AND five months’ ageing in NEW 500-litre French oak. New wood in a rosé is a bold decision; it works because the barrels hold 500 litres, a volume that reduces the wood-to-wine ratio, so what shows is volume and texture rather than oak. Bottled at 12.5% alcohol.
Serve between 10 °C and 12 °C, no colder — with this much texture the aromatics need room and the wine wants time in the glass. The producer indicates a cellaring window of three to five years.
At the table: grilled and roast fish, shellfish, monkfish rice, sushi, lightly spiced Asian cooking, white meats and fresh cheeses.
Awards: 89 points from Revista de Vinhos for the 2023 vintage. The Tinto Cão Rosé range has also been named Best Rosé in Portugal at the Prémios Grandes Escolhas.
